Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page at the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM)! This is where we provide answers to your common inquiries and strive to assist you in making a better choice for your medical education. At ACSOM, we carefully listen to your needs and inquiries, aiming to provide you with the necessary guidance.

Is it possible for graduates of the American Canadian School of Medicine to pursue practice opportunities in the United States or Canada?

When should I submit my application?

We have rolling admissions and accept students for the next two upcoming start dates.

What do I need to submit my application?

Applicants must submit a completed application form, CV, official transcripts from all schools attended, two letters of recommendation (one academic and one professional in nature), and a personal statement. Proof of English language proficiency for non-native English-speaking students can be met by taking either the TOEFL or the IELTS tests.

Are applicants granted interviews?

Your application will be reviewed by the admissions team. Applicants who are believed to be qualified candidates will then go through the interview process by the admission committee. Acceptance is based on academic performance, professional and volunteer service and the interview score.

What financial aid options are available to candidates?

Does ACSOM offer scholarships?

Once your full application and verified credentials are received, admitted students at ACSOM will be considered for a partial or full tuition scholarship based on academic merits, leadership, experience, research, and volunteerism.

What is housing like?

ACSOM has partnered with Safe Haven real estate to provide fully furnished housing options within walking distance of the campus. All off campus housing has been prescreened to make sure it meets the requirements of medical students. You can expect all units to be fully furnished, have high speed internet, backup power generators, and cleaning services provided for an additional fee. Does ACSOM accept transfer students from other medical schools?

Transfer students must meet all documentation requirements of a new applicant. Official and up-to-date transcript(s) from medical school(s) attended, along with a Dean’s Letter, must be provided. Students requesting to transfer directly to the Clinical Rotation program must have passed the U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) Step I or Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). Acceptance is based on the recommendation of the Admissions Committee.

Do you have a faculty-student mentoring program?

Each first-year student will be assigned to a designated group. Each faculty member is assigned to a maximum of 10 students, facilitating small-group case-based education. The faculty’s role is to provide education and mentoring.

How many start dates does ACSOM have each year?

ACSOM offers two start dates a year: in August and January.

Where are ACSOM clerkship campuses?

While ACSOM has affiliated university hospitals and clinics to meet students’ clinical training needs, we will allow core and elective rotations for our students at our clinical campus affiliates in the U.S. and Canada. Please see our website for an updated list of hospitals.

How much is tuition?

Year 1-2 Tuition (per year): $50,000 USD (tuition only)*

How are the studies organized during the COVID-19 pandemic?

All students have live classes. The education process is facilitated in accordance with safety requirements. All students and faculty members are required to wash hands frequently, use sanitizers, and maintain social distance. Masks are distributed to students by ACSOM staff. Sanitizers are available on Campus. Vaccination is a requirement for all faculty, staff, and students. Requirements will depend on the current epidemiological recommendations, which could be different for the classroom and clinical situations. We will keep students updated.

What qualifications would an international applicant need, and do you use credential evaluation like WES or NARIC?

The requirements are the same for all applicants. WES or NARIC evaluations are required for international students. Additionally, if English is their second language a TOEFL test score must be provided.

Can I bring my pet with me?

Students can bring their pets with them however, you will need to get approval from your landlord first and pay the appropriate pet fees. Most landlords do not allow pets, or have specific restrictions. You should work with Safehaven to find appropriate accommodations.

Secondly, you will need to obtain an entry permit from the government of Dominica to bring your pet. Vaccines certificate and documentation should be emailed to [email protected] prior to arrival for approval.

I am bringing my family with me, what schools are available for children?

The following contributions are charged for attending public and private assisted schools:

Range of Fees for Early Childhood Education:

  • Rural: $50/month
  • Urban: $150/month

Range of Fees for Primary School Education: Contributions vary from school to school. However, no fees are charged in public schools, but contributions are solicited.
Range of Fees for Secondary School Education: Contributions towards various activities are required and range from $150-$400 per school year.
Range of Fees for Tertiary School Education: Non-nationals are required to pay a fee of approximately $650 per semester.
Range of Fees for Private Assisted/Private Schools:

  • Private Assisted: $600-$1,000 per year
  • Private: $600-$1,000 per semester

What support does ACSOM provide students in obtaining a residency?

Once students have completed the first 2 years of basic science courses, there will be ongoing assistance for the following 2-year period to help students succeed in their MATCH and the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE). The Office of Student Affairs will work with the Academic Dean’s office to review student CVs and personal statements and practice in mock interviews.

Is ACSOM accredited and are there any sponsor notes on the World Directory of Medical Schools?

ACSOM is accredited by two WFME recognized accreditors, ACCM and IAAR. ACSOM is listed in the World Directory. For details please see our accreditation page on our website.

How safe is the campus?

The ACSOM campus is staffed 24 hours a day by security who monitor and check everyone who comes to the campus. There are modern security cameras across campus and a shuttle can take you to and from campus if you study late in the evening. Health and Safety protocols are in place and operational in the event of any emergency, whether it be illness, injury, inclement weather, or criminal activity. We work with local healthcare providers for student illnesses and injuries. ACSOM incorporates typical US requirements like Clery protocols.

What is student life like on campus?

As a new school, we are partnering with the Student Government Association to establish clubs, organizations, associations, and opportunities for sports recreation and social gatherings. It is important to spend time on one’s academics and take some downtime for healthy distractions. We have hosted social events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and beach days, and there have been a number of community events like service days for World Mental Health Day and World Diabetes Day.
