January 2027 at ACSOM: Full-Tuition Scholarships for Dominican Nationals and Financial Aid Options
Posted onQualifying Dominican nationals can attend the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) tuition-free, with all four years of tuition covered by the university. For prospective students considering the January 2027 cohort, ACSOM has announced its scholarship and financial aid program; 98% of accepted students receive a scholarship or financial aid award.
ACSOM is a fully accredited non-profit medical university in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Its financial support reflects the school’s purpose: addressing the cost barriers that continue to limit access to medical education.
Scholarships Available for January 2027
Dominican National Full-Tuition Scholarship
The Dominican National Full-Tuition Scholarship covers all four years of tuition and is valued at $214,000. Up to 10 awards are available each year. Five Dominican students are currently enrolled at ACSOM, including the current student government president.
Global Equity Scholarship
International students from outside the U.S. and Canada, including applicants from Europe, Africa, and Asia, can access the Global Equity Scholarship. The award provides $53,500 distributed across eight semesters.
Merit-Based Awards and Total Aid
ACSOM’s merit-based awards recognize academic excellence both at admission and during enrollment. Since the school’s founding, more than $5 million in total aid has been made available.
Understanding Tuition and Total Attendance Costs
ACSOM was built to address the financial barriers to medical education directly. Operating as a non-profit institution on a government-supported campus, the school holds four-year tuition and fees to $238,000—approximately 20% below the regional Caribbean average and well below U.S. private medical school rates.
Including living expenses, the expected total cost of attendance is $385,000 to $390,000.
Private and Institutional Lending Options
For Fall 2026, ACSOM has arranged private lending for students at interest rates of 9.85% or 13%. These compare favorably with the 12% to 18% rates typical of private medical education loans. Students who need it also have access to an institutional loan option.
Affordability Within ACSOM’s Non-Profit Mission
Carey James, MBA, President, American Canadian School of Medicine, described the role of financial support in the university’s mission:
“At ACSOM, affordability is not a footnote to our mission: it is the foundation of it. When nearly every student receives a scholarship and Dominican nationals can earn a medical degree tuition-free, we are doing what a non-profit medical school should do: removing barriers so that capable future physicians can focus on becoming excellent doctors.”
Medical Education and Accreditation at ACSOM
Located in Portsmouth, Commonwealth of Dominica, ACSOM was founded by physicians and is governed by an independent board of trustees composed of former deans and presidents of U.S. and Canadian medical schools. The university delivers physician-led, small-group instruction modeled on North American standards.
Students complete two years of foundational sciences in Dominica, followed by two years of clinical rotations at U.S. teaching hospitals. ACSOM holds five-year full accreditation from IAAR and provisional accreditation from ACCM, both recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
