Student Learning Center Support Structure

The Student Learning Center provides several levels of academic support to help students strengthen their understanding and improve academic performance.

Leading Faculty Support

Students are encouraged to first bring module-specific questions to the leading faculty during their working hours on campus. This gives students direct access to expert guidance on current course material and complex topics.  If additional support is needed after meeting with the leading faculty, students may contact the Student Learning Center for further assistance.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutors are students who have successfully completed the module and can provide helpful insight into course material, exam preparation, and study strategies.  Peer tutoring can help students better understand essential topics, prepare for exams, and approach coursework with greater confidence.

Faculty Tutoring

Faculty tutoring is available when students need additional support after working with leading faculty or peer tutors. Faculty tutoring sessions are tailored to the student’s specific needs and are scheduled in advance.  To request faculty tutoring, students should contact the Student Learning Center at least two days before the desired session by emailing learningcenter@acsom.edu.dm

Appointments

Students who would like to schedule a tutoring session should complete the appointment request form here. By scheduling a tutoring appointment, students agree to follow the Student Learning Center tutoring policies.

Workshops

The Student Learning Center offers workshops designed to help students improve test-taking skills, review course material, strengthen study habits, and prepare for final exams.  Workshops are typically offered once a month and usually last about 60 minutes. Students will receive information about upcoming workshops by email.  Current workshop topics include:

  • Learning How to Learn: This workshop focuses on effective study techniques and strategies to help students improve how they study, retain information, and approach their coursework.
  • Test-Taking Skills:  Students learn strategies for managing time during exams, understanding question formats, reducing test anxiety, and improving overall exam performance.
  • Interpretation of Laboratory Results:  This workshop helps students develop the ability to analyze and interpret laboratory data, an important skill in medical and scientific education.
  • Current Review Workshops:  These sessions provide a focused review of material covered in the current module, helping students reinforce their understanding before exams.  Workshops are open to all students who want to strengthen their academic skills, build confidence, and improve their performance.
